Bergamot Essential Oil

Origin: Bergamot essential oil  has been named after the Italian city of Bergamo. That’s where bergamot oil was first sold. Bergamot is said to be native to Morocco and even further back probably originated in Asia. It was introduced in Europe through Italy. Today, the best bergamot essential oil is said to come from Calabria in Southern Italy.

Scientific name: Citrus Bergamia

Caution: Possible skin irritant, only use diluted. Bergamot oil is photo-toxic, so never apply before going into the sun.

Bergamot essential oil: medicinal uses

Skin: Bergamot oil is great for oily skin and/or acne, psoriasis, eczema, varicose veins, cold sores and rashes. Dry skin and wrinkles will benefit from bergamot oil as well. With its delightful fresh scent, bergamot is a pleasure to use. It is one of those wonderful multi-purpose essential oils that have something to offer to almost every skin type, from normal to problem skin.

Other uses: Bergamot lowers fever, treats throat, mouth and skin infections, bronchitis and indigestion as well as loss of appetite and anxiety issues. For insomnia and nervous tension, use some bergamot essential oil at night. (in a bath or a massage for example) Cystitis and other urinary tract infections can be treated with bergamot. It is stimulating to the liver, stomach and spleen. Bergamot essential oil is also present in an incredible amount of modern perfumes and colognes.

Mood: Bergamot has a special way of clearing the head and mind, making it a stimulating and soothing oil at the same time. The refreshing scent of bergamot oil is relaxing and uplifting. Put some bergamot and grapefruit or tangerine essential oil in an oil burner when you feel sad or gloomy!
