Healthy smoothie recipes: Mango-Coconut

Some healthy smoothie recipes are extravagant. They involve at least twelve of the most eccentric, rare and exotic ingredients. Turning a trip to the organic store into a scavanger-hunt, trying to work your way through the list of hip and trendy food-names, which five years ago nobody had heard of.

Not this recipe. Just two ingredients. Easy-peasy. Easy on the wallet as well.

If you don’t believe a recipe with only two ingredients can be thàt good, I recommend trying it out as soon as possible. It is pure tropical bliss! Enjoy a sweet mango-coconut smoothie with a super simple recipe, as basic as… cutting a mango. Healthy smoothie recipes can keep our skin plump and hydrated from the inside, especially this one.

Mango’s are loaded with carotenoids, vitamin A, vitamin C and vitamin E. They contain antioxidants, which is always a bonus to fight ageing of the entire body, including skin.

Coconut water is the ultimate hydrating drink, full of electrolytes and containing more potassium than bananas. It also contains a fairly large amount of vitamin C. Drinking plenty of water is by far the best natural organic skin care remedy. The addition of coconut water to healthy smoothie recipes provides the ultimate hydration to quench thristy, dry skin.

Ingredients

(makes about two smoothies)

  • 1 mango
  • 1 Vita Coco drink

Steps

  • Cut the mango in pieces.
  • Divide equally over two smoothie cups.
  • Add coconut water to the maximum level, or a bit less if you want a more creamy texture. You can always add some more if it’s too thick.
  • Blend until the mango is completely mixed in.
  • Enjoy through a straw!

Where to find supplies?

Vita Coco coconut water can be found in stores. Make sure it is exactly the same product as in the picture. There are other suppliers of coconut water, but many contain added sugar. The point of making healthy smoothie recipes is not to augment our daily dose of sugar, right?

If your local store doesn’t carry any (pure) coconut water, shopping online may be an option. I like to order from iHerb, because of their incredibly large selection of natural organic products. They even have the coconut water.

No coconut water? No panic. I’ve also made this recipe with plain water and it was delicious. If you like your healthy smoothie recipes sweet, try adding either a few drops of stevia (liquid) or a squirt of agave.

Customize your healthy smoothie recipes

The whole idea of using coconut water came from the fact that I ran out of milk one day. I’m sure this recipe would taste very nice with regular milk, rice milk or oat milk as well.

A teaspoon of spirulina powder will make this smoothie go from radiant orange to a muddy brown, but if you don’t care about the looks too much, spirulina is a great addition for even more nutrients in your (already very healthy) drink.

Enjoying your healthy smoothie recipes together with a friend or loved one? Think of the presentation! Move the mixture into a glass and decorate with a slice of orange, lemon or a few leaves of mint, cocktail-style.
