Two ‘flavors’ of organic shampoo are part of the organic hair care line by Miessence: one is called Lemon Myrtle and one goes by the name Desert Flower.
I went looking for ‘desert flower extract’ in the ingredients of the second and didn’t find any. Curious… but the name sure sounds nice.
Thrilled to try this organic shampoo, knowing that it is made of only natural ingredients and nothing else, I was nonetheless wondering how well it would work. Because an organic shampoo (actually, 75 % organic ingredients) without chemicals and only natural ingredients is awesome, but we still want it to perform, right? Do its job – like a proper shampoo should.
Packaging
Miessence’s organic shampoo bottles are made of polypropylene. Yup, plastic. For a good reason, though! Miessence has done extensive research on the eco-friendliness of glass versus plastic. Glass is very heavy, resulting in high shipping costs. Glass needs to be recycled about 20 times before you can even start to call it eco-friendly. Turns out that all-in-all, recycleable plastic is the better, greener option. Miessence should know, since they are the only company with a carbon-negative footprint! A detailed report on ‘glass versus plastic’ can be found here.
Texture
Fairly runny, it spreads out well. Lemon Myrtle shampoo is light green, almost transparent. Desert Flower is colored darker, a surprising but still translucent dark red-orange.
Scent
Do you know how the leaves of a lemon myrtle plant smell, when you rub some between your fingers? This organic shampoo smells just like it. Nice and strong, too. Very fresh, green and lemon-ish. It reminded me of the lemon myrtle bushes in the garden, when I was little. I had forgotten how much I liked that fragrance. It is at least as enjoyable to rub into my hair under the shower!
The Desert Flower shampoo has a much more gentle scent. Hard to define, even. No particular recognition here for me, I just found it soft and discrete. It might be the better choice for babies and children because of that – but then again, kids could also really enjoy the ‘popping’ lemon myrtle.
Miessence Organic Shampoo Ingredients
If you’re looking for an organic shampoo for normal to dry hair, Desert Flower would be the one to choose. It is made with avocado oil (a very nourishing ingredient, great for both dry skin and hair) and yucca extract. As it turns out, yucca is a flowering plant native to the Mojave Desert and Sonoran Desert. Ha! So that’s what the name Desert Flower refers to.
Organic Shampoo ‘Lemon Myrtle’

For normal to oily hair, but also for hair ‘under excessive styling stress’ (as they call it at Miessence) the Lemon Myrtle shampoo would be your pick.

What I like about Miessence Organic Shampoo
My hair feels so very soft, it’s ridiculous. Especially after using the Desert Flower shampoo. And that’s without any conditioner, just the shampoo.
On top of being super soft, my hair has a lovely ‘fall’ to it, with both shampoos. A nice natural wave.
With the softness also comes more shine than usual.
Two days after using the Lemon Myrtle shampoo, still not much of an oily scalp. Same with the Desert Flower one.
Love the sent of both, with a slight preference for the fresh pick-me-up smell of lemon myrtle.
What I like less about about Miessence Organic Shampoo
Hmm… well… it’s pricey – all the good stuff is, I’m afraid.
You can get a bottle of cheap artificially scented petrochemical junk for a couple of bucks, but if you want the natural stuff, it’s just going to have a different pricetag.
Final Thoughts & Other Organic Shampoo Reviews
This truly is a natural hair product, entirely free of synthetics, silicone, chemicals etc… made with 75% organic ingredients. Great products, great results. Only the price can be a drawback. However, I have yet to find another all natural shampoo giving such good results when put to use. Miessence shampoo’s simply work. My hair feels clean, soft and manageable, for a good amount of time. And I just can’t say as much about many other natural, organic shampoo’s I’ve tried.
As a bonus: Made by a sustainable company running their business with a carbon-negative footprint. I mean carbon-negative – waauw – who else prioritizes sustainability to thàt extent? Miessence is really doing it, in a no bullshit kind of way!
Pricetag: 250 ml/8.5 fl.oz for US $ 24.00.
