Do you know how skincare manufacturers talk about the ‘active principles’ in skincare, most often a serum or face cream? Those catchy terms, that get a prominent place on the label design. It can be some natural extract, a synthetic substance, or a combination of both, such as something nature-inspired and then synthesized.
These powerful, concentrated components of skincare products are crucial to the effect of a concoction – the largest part of a formula being a base, this base is in no way futile, since it allows for the active components to reach their goal. Essential oils work as nature’s very own active principles, and they are very powerful.
How do anti-wrinkle essential oils work?
Incredibly small, essential oils work on a molecular level. Also, being present in plants, they do not need to be synthesized or created in a lab, but merely extracted. Essential oils are composed of various chemical components (different ones, depending on the plant).
You may have noticed some of these terms on the ingredient labels of natural skincare products from Europe, where the specific chemical components of essential oils are required to be listed separately.
‘Regular’ skincare uses synthetic substances with certain skin-improving properties. For natural and organic skincare brands, it makes complete sense to rely on essential oils. Oils are as versatile as the plants they’re made from, and different ones have different healing properties. Some are great for oily skin, acne and blemishes, while others help with dry, sensitive or aging skin.
So, let’s have a look at which are the best anti-wrinkle essential oils.
1. Rose Essential Oil
A rose, the queen of all flowers, makes one of the most valued and also expensive essential oils. In case you’re wondering why rose essential oil has to be so expensive, this has to do with the amount of essential oil present in the flowers (very little) and the number of petals needed to distill the oil (a whole lot!)
Rose essential oil is regenerating, soothing and helps to even out the skin tone and balance moisture levels.
2. Frankincense Essential Oil
Frankincense essential oil is a healing powerhouse, and one of my personal favorites. It isn’t all that expensive compared to some, which – considering how little essential oil you need – makes it a pleasantly affordable companion when combating the skin’s different signs of aging. While frankincense essential oil is soothing and … (making it great for dry or mature skin), it also has strong antiseptic, anti-fungal, and anti-inflammatory properties.
If you’re subject to a blemish or two, while also wanting to prevent or minimize signs of aging with some anti-wrinkle essential oils, frankincense is a great pick. Frankincense protects the skin’s existing cells and stimulates the growth of new skin cells.
Frankincense is one of my favorite essential oils because it is so versatile and gentle. It’s great to refine the skin all while working against premature aging. Read also: Essential Oils to Tighten Pores: The Secret to Smoother, Clearer Skin.
3. Myrrh Essential Oil
Myrrh essential oil is exceptionally healing. In ancient Greece, the soldiers used to have a small bottle of myrrh in their carry-on bag.
While its anti-inflammatory properties make myrrh essential oil great for small wounds and infections, it also has powerful antioxidant and regenerating properties. The latter makes myrrh one of the best anti-wrinkle essential oils – and the anti-inflammatory action never hurts. Myrrh oil will protect the skin’s cells and prevent premature aging.
4. Sandalwood Essential Oil
Sandalwood essential oil is anti-inflammatory and moisturizing. It has a characteristic sweet, warm and woodsy fragrance that you’ll most likely either love or hate.
Unfortunately, sandalwood trees are becoming increasingly rare in the world. The value of sandalwood essential oil has caused trees to be subject to illegal harvesting. It takes at least 30 years for a tree to be ready, and this ‘poaching’ often happens too early.
Needless to say, the increasing scarcity and high demand
A good reason to only buy from reputable suppliers, that guarantee both the purity of the oil and proper treatment of the trees and environment. (Goes for all essential oils, but in particular for this ‘endangered’ one!
5. Carrot Seed Essential Oil
Carrot seed essential oil is distilled from the dried seed of carrot flowers and promotes the growth of new cells. It has strong antioxidant properties. Since aging and the formation of wrinkles are due to the exposure to so-called ‘free radicals’, carrot seed oil is your friend in the fight against aging.
This selection of the best anti-wrinkle essential oils wouldn’t be complete without it. Carrot seed essential oil is both toning and rejuvenating and contains many vitamins and minerals, especially vitamins C and E.
6. Geranium Essential Oil
Maybe you’ve previously noticed geranium essential being mentioned in relation to acne, and you’re surprised that it also made the list of best anti-wrinkle essential oils?
Geranium is antiseptic, anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory and can be used to treat many ailments, from acne to varicose veins and even scars. While not my absolute top choice as an anti-wrinkle essential oil, Geranium has a beautifying effect on the skin on many fronts.
In a different note, geranium essential oil is an anti-depressant and can relieve stress and exhaustion. While not immediately related to the skin, those issues typically don’t make the skin look any better, and may even add some unwanted lines to our faces.
7. Ylang-Ylang Essential Oil
Ylang ylang essential oil is very versatile. It helps balance the skin, regardless of which end of the spectrum you’re situated on. Both too oily and too dry skin can benefit from treatment with ylang ylang essential oil. This oil has regenerative properties and it can help improve the skin’s elasticity and reduce fine lines.
