Jurlique Purely Age-Defying Nourishing Cleansing Oil Review

Jurlique Purely Age-Defying Nourishing Cleansing Oil Review

This is what Jurlique’s cleansing oil promises to be/do:

  • Replenishing
  • Nourishing
  • Line smoothing

A light-textured innovative blend of five botanical seed oils of Castor, Sunflower, Blackcurrant, Sesame and Meadowfoam gently dissolve makeup and deeply cleanse to lift away impurities to soften and condition the skin.

Highly effective anti-aging and hydrating ingredients help smooth the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, while soothing and comforting signs of dehydration.

How to use it

Warm a small amount in dry hands.
Gently massage with circular motions over dry skin and eye area.
Wet fingertips to emulsify the cleansing oil and rinse well with warm water.
Use it twice daily, morning and night.

Review or toss the sample?

With no more than a small sample, I can’t review the long term effects of this cleansing oil. I’m not interested in a full size, because Jurlique is not a cruelty-free skincare brand, but might as well do a review anyway (versus throwing out the unopened sample) with the goal of putting some similar cruelty-free options out there.

Overall, it’s a pleasure!

Overall this face cleansing oil was pleasant to use. The oil to milk transformation with the addition of water always enthralls me. I know it’s pure science and not magic, but it definitely feels like a little bit of magic!
The fragrance is also quite lovely – a gentle, herbal scent. Definitely more natural smelling that some of Jurlique’s other products.

While enjoying the scent and the oil-to-milk performance of this face cleanser, I’m not sure how thorough it really cleans. I still feel a hint of oil on my face after rinsing with warm water. Maybe that’s intended, with those nourishing and line-smoothing properties in mind.

Cruelty-free alternatives to Jurlique’s Nourishing Cleasing Oil

So, what to use instead of Jurlique’s face cleansing oil?

Burt’s Bees Cleansing Oil

Burt’s bees cleansing oil is one alternative, and a much friendlier priced one too. Burt’s bees is easy to find in stores or online and cruelty-free, though the company is owned by Clorox (definitely not cruelty-free) since …

JOIK deep cleansing facial oil

JOIK deep cleansing facial oil, an exotic find that is increasingly popular in the U.K. and a few other European countries (Finland, the Netherlands). Worldwide shipping from local British websites can be pricey, but LoveLula serves the international market and keeps shipping very reasonable. It’s free (worldwide) for orders over £15. JOIK’s Cleansing Oil does not turn to milk, but it contains some great oils and essential oils to help improve (heal, balance, nourish) the skin.

No shortage of cruelty-free cleansing oils, but those that turn to milk are rare.

There are many more facial cleansing oils available on LoveLula, but those doing the oil-to-milk thing are harder to find. What is known as the regular oil cleansing method involves removing the oil with a steaming washcloth. Some people swear by the oil cleansing method. Personally I don’t care for it at all, but that’s a separate topic.

If you want to get busy with hot water and washcloths, there is no shortage of face cleaning oils and balms that require such props. However, to qualify as a decent swap for Jurlique’s cleansing facial oil something should do the same trick and turn to milk, right? That is one of its key features after all. Or at the least simply be rinsable with water, like Burt’s bees cleansing oil.

Here’s the result of my further search: two great options, although they aren’t really main-stream and as such harder to come by.

Neighborhood Botanicals Face Off Cleanser

A little gem I’d almost bet you haven’t heard of before: neighborhood botanicals’ face off cleanser. Oil to milk? Check. Cruelty-free, indeed. Natural ingredients? Fairly. The founder of this independent skincare brand is a hoot and reading the captions on her Instagram feed cracked me up. Also at wolf & badger.

Maelove The Day Eraser

Now this may just be the perfect substitute, by certified cruelty-free and vegan skincare brand MAELOVE. It’s called “the day eraser” – a face cleansing oil that turns to milk. With a long list of rave reviews, the only possible downside to this one is that Maelove skincare isn’t very natural. It doesn’t aim or claim to be, in all fairness. So if you aren’t too stringent about using only the most natural skincare, do check out their nice website.

In Conclusion

If you were expecting an in depth review of the Jurlique facial cleansing oil, and still ended up all the way down here, I hope it’s brought you some new ideas.

Maybe you thought Jurlique was cruelty-free. Their products are not tested on animals in most countries. Unfortunately, Jurlique can’t be considered cruelty-free due to their presence in China. A choice all cosmetic brands face is to either forgo their share of the Chinese market, or knowingly and willingly submit samples to be tested on animals prior to being allowed to import.

While selecting what we use for being natural, organic, fair trade and otherwise ethical is awesome, if a skincare/cosmetics/beauty brand can’t be bothered to take a solid stance against animal testing, I really don’t care how great their products are.

Either you put yourself on the map as a cruelty-free brand, or you have blood on your hands, Jurique. There is no middle ground; no such thing as being mostly cruelty-free, because you bow to the Chinese lawmakers and their retarded policies. Here’s a more in-depth article on Jurlique’s official statement regarding animal testing.

Jurlique seems to take the organic piece to heart, but sadly when it comes to the Chinese market they’re just another skincare brand having chosen profits over the animals.
